What Is a Microhood Microwave?

A microhood microwave is designed to fit on the underside of a cabinet above a cooktop. It’s smaller and more versatile than a standard microwave that must sit on a counter or another flat, solid surface. Microhood microwaves are made by several companies, including Kenmore Microhood, Whirlpool Microhood Microwave, and KitchenAid Microhood Microwave.

The over the range microwave or Microhood Microwave for short is something seen in many homes today. Where did it come from, and what purpose does it serve? Even after extensive research we were not able to determine exactly when it was brought to market. It certainly would have been sometime after 1970 when microwaves in general began to become a common site in homes across the country.

While they may be practical and inexpensive, at Heartland Homes we think the era of the microhood has long since passed, and that we have a better solution for our home owners. A traditional microwave sits on a countertop or inside of a cabinet where the underside is not exposed.

However, a Microhood Microwave serves the function of a microwave and a vent hood for the range or built in cooktop below. That makes it a very cost effective solution for how to deal with the steam generated from cooking on the stove below. It also frees up counter space by hanging the microwave in the air. Identification

The word Microhood comes from combining the terms microwave and oven or range hood. The unit has the necessary cooking features of a standard microwave, but also has an exhaust hood over a stove top. The controls for both components are featured on the face of the microwave unit. Some Microhood Microwave units also contain a light that can be powered on from the control panel. The light serves as an over-the-range light.

Sizes and Venting

Microhood Microwave come in several sizes, but they are all small enough to fit in the space beneath the cabinetry directly above the cooktop. Measure the width and depth of the cabinet space to determine the maximum size for the microwave. Whether or not you are willing to put in a duct for the microwave also determines your Microhood Microwave options. Some Microhood microwave require a duct that vents to the outside, which must be installed through a wall or up through the roof. Some include ductless exhaust features that circulate air back into the kitchen.

Microhood Microwave Installation

A Microhood Microwave is a kitchen appliance. It’s a combination microwave and range hood fan that installs above the stovetop. A microhood allows you to place the microwave at a convenient height and free up counter space. Similar to a ventilation system, the hood fan portion of the appliance, on the exposed underside of the installed microhood.

Measure the cabinet area where you want to install the microhood microwave. Locate a three-prong outlet near the cabinet or ask an electrician to install one for the microhood. Ensure that the outlet has a dedicated circuit breaker.

Plan the layout for the ducts to fit between studs or joists, running as straight as possible. Avoid exceeding 140 feet, the maximum linear run recommended by the manufacturer. Place the duct against the wall and mark the opening that leads to the exterior. Cut through the opening and run the duct along the desired route, sealing connectors with foil duct tape. Caulk the gaps between the duct and exterior wall. Install the cap on the outer end of the duct.

Loosen and remove the mounting plate screwed or taped to the top back of the microwave.

Remove the screws attaching the blower motor to the microhood and set them aside. Knock out two of the four blower vents using a small hammer. Two of the vents are on the mounting plate and the other two are on the back of the microhood. The ones you need to remove depend on how the microhood is vented; remove the two at the back if the system is wall-vented or the two on the blower mounting plate for a roof-vented system.

Replace the blower on the microhood with screws. Also reattach the blower mounting plate.

Locate the exact center of the microhood opening using a measuring tape. Extend the center point vertically down to form a straight line to which you will attach the mounting bracket. Use a level to ensure the vertical line is straight.

Locate and mark wall studs inside the opening, preferably on each side of the center mark, using a stud finder. You need to connect the bracket to at least two studs so it holds the microhood microwave in place.

Hold the mounting plate on the wall, aligned against the pencil mark. Position the plate so its top is at least 30 inches above the cooktop.

Follow installation instructions for installing the upper cabinet template. Set this template under the base of the cabinet, directly above the cooking range. Hold the mounting tape against the wall and mark the opening for the duct. Cut through the wall to provide an access to the duct.

Secure the mounting tape to the wall with screws. Secure the adapter to the tabs on the plate. Lift the microhood microwave and hang it from the tabs.
